The Tuscan treasures of Valdichiana Aretina

A journey through the history of Tuscany

Valdichiana Aretina, south-east part of Tuscany, has always been a land of passage that has seen populations of all kinds. Every merchant, pilgrim or simple traveler who has crossed these hills and valleys has witnessed places of Tuscan art, history and culture in these generous lands. Right here, not far from the hamlet of Marciano della Chiana and Foiano della Chiana, is the plain of Scannagallo, where the most important battle in the history of this region was fought: the battle of Scannagallo (or of Marciano), which with the victory of the Florentine faction marked the way for the birth of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

The historical stages between castles, villages and art

The journey to the dawn of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany begins with its ancient capital, Florence, precisely in Palazzo Vecchio, in the Sala del Cinquecento. A painting by Vasari is held here with Florentine pride, testifying the importance of the event: the Battle of Scannagallo, which depicts the victory of the ancient Republic of Florence. From here you will then arrive in Valdichiana Aretina for your stay. A naturalistic trekking awaits you in Foiano della Chiana, to visit the beauties of Tuscan nature and the battle memorial attributed to Vasari. Also awaiting your visit in these areas are the castles of Marciano della Chiana and the tower, and the castle of Lucignano and the local Civic Museum.
