Foiano Carnival

A historical Carnival in a joy and happy setting

A regulation of the Foiano Community Statute of 1539 - still present in the town hall - decreed three days of celebration for Carnival. This testifies the important roots of the Foiano Carnival which in 2020 reached its 481 edition, being awarded the oldest carnival in Italy.

In addition to its important history, what distinguishes the Foiano Carnival is its artistic and social value. The majestic papier-mache floats made by the volunteers (reaching up to a maximum of 17 meters in length, 10 in width and 13 in height) and the choreography of the mascherata, are the result of an assiduous work that lasts all year round, give a real spectacle in the eyes of those attending the event. And then the cantieri, the old city quarters: the life of the inhabitants of Foiano is marked by both physical and moral commitment for Carnival, by the four city quarters Azzurri, Bombolo, Nottambuli and Rustici.

They are the ones who parade downtown with the four allegorical floats, in front of a jury of art experts of national caliber. The winner will be revealed only at the end of the last Sunday, one of the most important days of the year for the Foiano people.

The Foiano Carnival is held for five consecutive Sundays and it is preceded by parties and events in the various cantieri that animate Foiano and Valdichiana for over a month. The period varies according to Easter.
