The Cassero tower, with its unmistakable profile, is the symbol of Castiglion Fiorentino. The Cassero area still retains the proud character of a medieval defensive structure. The climb - literally - of the historic center takes a true journey to reach through history, from the modern era that definitively marked the development and the shape of Castiglion Fiorentino down to the late Medieval and Etruscan era, to which the origin of the village is owed.
The first settlements in the Cassero area in fact date back to the eighth century B.C.. From then on, the settlement of the Etruscan civilization and the growing necessity to defend the land led to the raising of a tall wall. The Cassero, as it appears today, is in fact the result of a series of military strategic and technological evolutions when, starting from the 11th century, it became in effect the seat of a control castle.
Subsequently, around 1350, was built the Casseretto, a fortification inside the castle structure and still today remains a part of the walls and of its tower. We know for sure that inside the structure there was a well to meet the need for water whenever an attack on the castle would arrive and we also know that majolica and glazed tiles were produced there, as confirmed by the archaeological finds that were found in the area.
The tower, about 35 meters high, dominates the Cassero square. Its construction dates back to the fourteenth century and it is still possible to climb it today - for those who are not afraid of vertigo - and enjoy one of the most beautiful and wide views of the entire Valdichiana, the Val di Chio and the ancient village.
The best period to visit the Cassero is during the Maggio Castiglionese, the Medieval Festival organized by the Rione il Cassero which brings the area back to its prime. In this festival there are plenty of people appearing dressed in medieval clothing, set-ups absolutely in line with the time, with also a sensational fireworks show at the end of the event. A wonderful as well as suggestive spectacle, so much that the tower almost seems to be made of flames.
For those who cannot hold back their curiosity, it is possible to admire the Castiglion Fiorentino Cassero and all the points of interest of the village with the a virtual tour of the town.
